Betelnut

A long time ago, there was [a girl named] Tjukutjuku (In Paiwan, sa before a proper name functions as an honorary mark to the person mentioned); she was chewing betelnut as she went to the headwater. She spit the betelnut juice in the source of water, and out of the spit grew the betelnut tree; the betelnut tree grew bigger and  yielded betelnuts; Tjukutjuku picked the fruit and chewed it.

That Tjukutjukutj went to her friend's house to play. But she looked [and found]  the house was not tidy. So Tjukutjuku took the broom and swept the floor. As she tidied up [the house], Tjukutjuku was chewing the betel nut. Then she went back to her place chewing betenut.

The friend returned, looked at the house, and said like this, “Goodness, who cleaned the house? It is a blessing that I keep her.” As the friend wished, Tjukutjuku came; according to the story, she married the friend. And this is how betelnut came about.

There was actually no betelnut in the past; if so, the quantity was very small. In the old time, betelnut was really important. According to customs, betelnut was the first [gift] to be presented to people [and/or] enemies at ceremony, wedding, meeting, visit, and toast to the people of the village [and/or] enemies. What do we mean by [saying that] betel nut was very important? “The value of betel nut is just like the life of a man; it is comparable to life, just like how we also cherish life,” the elders said.

However, our old ways are not being followed nowadays. According to how the later generation views it, this fruit is bad for the health. It is hoped that people watch the chewing of betelnut, so the health of our people could be taken care of; this is what's valued now.
