Paiwan Every Day 6: ramaljeng // ramaljemaljen

The lessons from a Paiwan elder may not be so different. They care about community and solidarity. Here is one example. 

temulu aravac a ramaljemaljen tu, 
"Inika tjen a maqilji a maramilj, a maramilj tja sikasiaqsiaq saka tja sikasipunsipun", aya. 

In English: 
Elders often teach this, "We shall not be stingy nor greedy; being greedy brings us shame and makes us lose utterly". 

Glossary: 
  1. t<em>ulu: teach, actor voice (AV). The root is tulu 'teach, instruct'. 
  2. ramalje-maljen: elders. The root is ramaljeng in reduplication (RED). 
  3. ma-qilji: to be selfish. The root is qilji 'selfish'. 
  4. ma-ramilj: to be greedy. The root is ramilj 'can eat a lot, large quantity'. 
  5. si-ka-siaq-siaq: to be shamed. The root is siaq 'shame' in reduplication (RED). 
  6. si-ka-sipun-sipun: to lose. The root is sipun 'to lose completely' in reduplication (RED).
