Paiwan Every Day 1: varung // kinipuvarung

This is a new challenge and a new project. 

I will post one Paiwan sentence every day, providing translation, glossary (to the best of my knowledge), and reading. By the end of 2020, I will have 299 sentences. Without futher ado, let's begin. 


a kinipuvarung nua namasevec a caucau, napapamamaw; 
ljakua, a kinipuvarung nua nakuya a caucau, amin a pavavecaveca. 

In English:
People with integrity in the heart are consistent, but people with evil thoughts are only lying. 

Glossary:
 

  1. a: subject case marker 
  2. k<in>i-pu-varung: to put in the heart, to remember. ki 'to get something'; -in- undergoer voice making infix; pu- 'to have something'; the root is varung 'heart'.  
  3. nua: of, genitive (GEN) case marker
  4. na-ma-sevec: to be honest with interity. na- 'perfective' (PRF); ma- 'stative'; the root is sevec 'straightward, honest'. 
  5. na-pa-pa-mamaw: to be alike or consistent. pa- 'to make or enable'; the root is mamaw 'the same'.
  6. ljakua: but, cojunction of contrast
  7. na-kuya: bad or ill. The root is kuya 'evil, bad luck, complaint'. 
  8. amin: only
  9. a: ligature (LIG)
  10. pava-veca-veca: be lying. The root is veca 'dishonest, lying'.
